Banbridge - Ballymena Swimming Club

Gala Report : Banbridge v Ballymena 26/09/09

In the first gala of the season Ballymena travelled to Banbridge with a team weakened by injury and illness. Last season’s encounter had been closely contested with Ballymena coming out on top but despite a total of 62 personal best times (PBs) 33 for the girls and 29 for the boys the Banbridge swimmers were just too strong this time and won by the slender margin of 20 points. The gala got off to an exciting start with the ‘A’ group girls relay. Ballymena looked out of it when their last swimmer Katie Morrow flew down the pool and overtook the home swimmer -to the audible dismay of the Banbridge supporters - to record Ballymena’s first win of the night. In a similar display of form Lindsay Darragh pulled out a win for the C group girls. At the end of the relay events the scores were level.
In the individual events the Banbridge lead was never more than 12 points and as evident from the PBs both teams swam well with Ballymena dominating the older age groups whilst Banbridge had the edge in the younger groups.
In the final relays Banbridge once again did enough to close out the gala with a 20 point advantage. Ballymena had the consolation of seeing the senior girl’s and boy’s teams winning the last two races of the night.
Amongst the numerous PBs Roisin Ferris and Cai Armstrong stood out with 5 apiece closely followed by Rachael Reid with 4. Swimming for the first time in the team were brothers Niall and Cavin McCormack who both swam well.
Perhaps not the start the local club had hoped for so it’s back to training for the next gala which is at home against the Leander club of Belfast on the 17th October.

Brothers Niall & Cavin McCormack newcomers to the PTL team ,coach Derek Beatie and Roisin Ferris and Cai Armstrong who both achieved 5 PBs each.
